An elderly farmer was tortured and robbed on his farm at Burhmansdrift near Mafikeng, North West police said on Saturday.
Daan van Zyl, 76, was attacked by three men who assaulted him, sprayed him with pepper spray and poured boiling water on his feet and legs on Friday afternoon, said Captain Elsabe Augoustides.
"They stole quite a lot of money from him and took off with his Toyota Hilux after threatening him with a firearm," said Augoustides.
They also stole his .22 rifle.
One of the attackers was in full police uniform, another wore an illuminated apron similar to those used by police officers and the third was in civilian clothes.
"They fired a shot inside the house but fortunately no-one was injured," said Augoustides.
Van Zyl's wife was not at the farm at the time and the domestic worker was told to "lie down and keep quiet".
The farmer was taken to Victoria Hospital and was discharged later, said Augoustides.
The attackers fled the scene in a Citi Golf and the farmer's Toyota Hilux.
