Pretoria - A Pretoria man who blindly shot at armed robbers while they were assaulting him, accidentally shot and wounded his wife.
Doep du Plessis, 70, from Pretoria West and his wife Louise van Niekerk, 67, were overpowered in their home by armed men at about 21:00 on Sunday.
The men attacked the elderly couple with an iron pipe and a gun.
"I shouted at Louise to bring a gun. She gave it to me but I could not even take aim. As he was assaulting me, the weapon's magazine fell under a chair," said Du Plessis.
Du Plessis said he shot upwards while the robbers were continuing to assault him and his wife. During the shooting, his wife was shot in the hand. The men fled shortly afterwards with R300 and Du Plessis's pistol.
Du Plessis is believed to have wounded one of his attackers.
Family members followed a blood trail leading from the couple's home to a house only a couple of hundred metres down the road.
Police were called and two men were arrested at the house in connection with the attack.
Police spokesperson Brenda Kgafela confirmed that two men had been arrested. Police are searching for a third suspect.
Du Plessis sometimes sells pawned goods and one of the attackers came to the house, saying he had a DVD player that he wanted to sell. Du Plessis initially said he was not interested, but later opened the door to look.
"When I opened the door, I looked at a 9mm pistol," said Du Plessis.
Two other men followed.
The couple was taken to hospital and doctors operated on Van Niekerk. Her condition is stable.
"These barbarians will kill you for 10c. You don't think it will happen to you, but it happens in seconds," said Du Plessis.
