Who impoverished the rest of Africa, Mamphele? / Wie het res van Afrika verarm, Mamphele?

(English translation from African Crisis, Original Afrikaans version from Praag)

English Translation:

Who impoverished the rest of Africa, Mamphele?

The African culture of blame is still standing strongly in South Africa. Just recently the previous official of the World Bank, Mamphele Ramphele, made a declaration to the University of Cape Town that “people under apartheid were deliberately impoverished, and if we don’t tackle it, we must not be surprised when there is anger and brutality on our streets.”

http://www.news24.com/Beeld/Suid-Afrika/0,,3-975_2035231,00.html

Ramphele’s statement contains two elements: an acceptance (apartheid deliberately impoverished people) and a threat (if there is no redistribution of wealth, or “compensation,” there will be violence). Her statement can also be read as an explanation for the anarchy and violence that has been rife in the country since 1994, and which places South Africa at the top of Interpol’s list for murder and rape.

Ramphele’s “stature,” if one can call it that, rests on the fact that she was the lover of the murdered Steve Biko. Biko was a Black nationalist and some of his interviews with the BBC can be found on the internet. During these he reveals himself as a typical Afrocentrist whose ideas are not far removed from those of Robert Mugabe. For someone whose “great intellect” has been praised to high heaven, it is surprising that he could not express himself properly in English. Perhaps he spoke better Xhosa.

However, Ramphele’s “expert” opinion about apartheid will not withstand the test of cold logic.

Firstly, why would the previous NP regime want to “deliberately impoverish” the country? Was it in order to collect less in taxation, draw more international criticism, or just because they were somewhat crazy?

When we look at the previous policy and statements of the previous regime from the time of Verwoerd, it is clear how the country always regarded Black development as a high priority. Apparently more money was spent towards Black development, whether in the previous homelands, or in the urban areas than the total amount spent in all the UN’s development agencies on the Third World since 1945.

It is probably true that Black South Africans on average are poorer than Whites. However, their level of skills, training, entrepreneurship, etc, is lower than that of Whites, as well as that of the Indians. The latter were also regarded as being “victims of apartheid,” that they should receive racial priority before that of whites. Yet the Indians in five of the nine provinces of South Africa are on average wealthier that Whites!!

No government in history, except that of Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, who enjoys much admiration among South Africa’s Black elite, has ever attempted to impoverish its population – least of all the previous White governments in this country.

While Blacks are poorer than Whites or Indians for obvious reasons, South African Blacks, however, are far, far wealthier than their peers in the rest of Africa. Something like 38 countries south of the Sahara receive aid and support in some way or another, whether it be food assistance, development assistance or whatever. According to the World Bank the average GNP per head in Africa south of the Sahara was exactly $577.10 in 2002. In comparison, South Africa boasts with a GNP of $3630 per head – thus six times more than that of the average African country!

Should one accept Ramphele’s absurd hypothetical argument, she should be able to answer the question: who then “deliberately impoverished” the people elsewhere in Africa? Was it the African governments that were out to create as much poverty as possible, like Mugabe has done, for the past forty years?

Apparently the answer is more complicated than that. Just as African leaders did not try to deliberately impoverish their countries, a previous cabinet committee did not decide to try to stem economic growth and prosperity in South Africa. Or does that represent the latest Black consciousness theory that Blacks represent better rulers than Whites? For if we accept Ramphele’s opinion that people in Africa do not have wealth and prosperity, but pursue poverty, we have to agree that Black governments elsewhere on the continent succeeded far better with their $577 per head than Verwoerd and P.W. Botha ever did.

However, let us try to be less ridiculous and conduct a serious political and economical debate. Africa (and its poor) can only benefit by it, provided people like Ramphele – who, through her experience at the World Bank – should know better and rather come forward with logical facts and arguments for a change.

The plea for compensation because of apartheid is modeled on the now hollow-ridden claim for compensation because of slavery that was brought up during the UN World Conference on Racism in 2001. The world recognized and rejected it for what it was – just another variation of the cupped-hand salute that Africa is so well-known for.

Dan Roodt

Oorspronklike Afrikaanse weergawe:

A short film showing former South African president Nelson Mandela singing about killing whites has recently been made available on the web by the organisation African Crisis.

The film, which was shot in 1992, shows Nelson Mandela together with members of the ANC, the ANC's military fraction the Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and the South African Communist Party singing a war song of how they have pledged to kill the white inhabitants of the country.

The song is mainly performed in Xhosa, the language spoken by the African tribe to which Mandela and the majority of the ANC belong. To the right of Mandela in the picture stands the present South African Minister of Intelligence, Ronnie Kasrils, who is among the first to clench his fist in a so-called black power salute during the song.

The second part of the film shows how women and children, all members of the ANC, are singing the same song during a political meeting.

Fuelling the masses with war songs is common in Africa. It was used for example in former Rhodesia, presently Zimbabwe, where they were called ”Chimurenga” (Eng. war songs).

Former leader of the ANC Youth League, Peter Mokaba, has been a major driving force behind the agitation among blacks against whites in South Africa, using songs that encouraged the murdering of whites. Mokaba, presently South Africa's Environmental and Tourist Minister, was one of the most energetic song and dance leaders during the meetings held by the ANC prior to the elections in 1994 where slogans like ”Kill the Farmer!” and ”Kill the Boer!” were chanted openly:

En av dem som var drivande i uppviglandet av svarta mot vita i Sydafrika genom kampsånger som uppmanar till mord på vita, var förre ledaren för ANC:s ungdomsförbund, Peter Mokaba. Mokaba, även före detta Sydafrikansk miljö-och turistminister, var en de mest energiska dans- och sångledarna under de möten som hölls av ANC inför valet 1994 där slagord som ”Kill the farmer!” (sve. ”Döda farmaren!”) och ”Kill the Boer!” (sve. ”Döda boern!”) skanderades helt öppet:

”Hamba kahle mkhonto we Sizwe, Tihna Abantu bomkhonto Sizimisele Ukuwa bulala woma lamabunu”
– We members of Umkhonto are prepared to kill all the Boers.

”Khwela phezukwendlu Ubutshele umanishaya Ibhunu umama vyajabula”
– Get on the roof and tell them that when I hit the Boer, my mother becomes happy.

”Amabhunu ahlupha abazali Ekhaya bathi ziphi Izingane zabo Sizbashaya nge Nge bazooka”
– Whites and Boers are troubling our parents at home: we are going to hit them with our Ak-47's and bazookas.

Peter Mokaba
Foto: ANC
Though today he maintains that the songs were just a sort of ”campfire songs”, these statements by Peter Mokaba made during a meeting with black students, published in The Johannesburg Star on the 25th of April in 1993, tell a different story:

Även om han senare hävdade att sångerna endast var en slags ”lägereldsallsånger”, så säger de här uttalandena av Peter Mokaba från ett möte med svarta publicerat i The Johannesburg Star den 25 april 1993 något annat:

– They are complaining that in our songs, in our chants, we have been saying ”Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer.” I repeat: ”Kill the Boer, the Farmer, Kill the Boer, the Farmer. Shoot to kill - nyamazano” (Eng. the prey).

”De klagar på att vi i våra sånger, i våra rop, säger: 'Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer'. Jag upprepar:

– Whether they like it or not, this is our chant. This is our song. This is our tradition. This is our culture, whether they like it or not...

Songs encouraging the killing of South Africa's white farmers, of which almost 2000 have been murdered by blacks since the ANC took over power in 1994, are still common in South Africa. Even the president of the country, Thabo Mkebi, has been witnessed when taking part in these dances and songs.

During the trial earlier this year against South Africa's then vice president Jacob Zuma, who was charged with rape but acquitted, crowds of blacks were singing Zuma's personal favourite song ”My Machine Gun” outside the courthouse.

Under rättegången tidigare i år mot Sydafrikas dåvarande vicepresident Jacob Zuma som stod åtalad för våldtäkt men frikändes, sjöng svarta folkmassor Zumas egen favoritsång ”My Machine Gun” (sve. ”Mitt maskingevär”) utanför rättegångslokalen.

Zuma is generally considered to have the biggest chances of becoming South Africa's next president.

Dad killed in family hijacking

20/11/2006 22:24 - (SA)

Elise Tempelhoff , Beeld

Vanderbijlpark- A 34-year-old attorney died in Natalspruit Hospital after being shot by three armed hijackers at Thokoza, in full view of his wife and baby daughter.

Eddie Barnard died a few minutes after being admitted to hospital on Saturday night with bullet wounds in his chest, stomach and back.

Barnard, his wife, Rena, and their nine-month-old daughter, Carli, were overpowered by three armed hijackers in front of their house in SE 2, Vanderbijlpark about 20:45 on Saturday night.

They were forced into the rear section of their 4x4 Toyota Fortuner, and covered with blankets.

The hijackers headed for Thokoza on the East Rand.

Beeld heard that neighbours, who had seen the hijacking and kidnapping, tried in vain to contact police.

Threw out the baby

Rena told friends afterwards that the men had stopped, thrown her husband out of the vehicle and fired two shots.

They then threw the baby out and fired another shot.

A shocked Henk Scheepers, chairperson of the Vanderbijlpark Chamber of Commerce, who is a friend and colleague of Eddie's, said: "Rena thought the men had first killed Eddie and then their daughter."

Scheepers said he and some colleagues joined in the search for the family after they had heard of the hijacking and, in the "confusion", someone phoned to say Barnard had been admitted to Natalspruit Hospital.

Scheepers sped off to the hospital, but Barnard had died minutes earlier.

A traumatised Rena told Scheepers at the hospital that she had sat under the blankets the whole time, and heard three shots.

She thought the men had killed her husband and daughter.

The robbers then threw her out of the vehicle and drove off at high speed.

Scheepers said Barnard had been badly wounded and Carli had light injuries to the head and a few scratches.

Carli was recovering with family.

Rena ran to a nearby road and stopped a car, which rushed them to hospital.

Had to hold friend's body

At the hospital there was "chaos" because of a shortage of staff and the doctor on duty asked Scheepers and a friend to help him in theatre to wash the blood from Barnard's body.

Scheepers said it was terrible to have to hold his friend's body while the blood was being washed off.

Scheepers said: "The crime in our land is repugnant and unacceptable."

Police spokesperson Maria Mazibuko, said the family's 4x4 had been recovered on Sunday at Park station.

There have been no arrests yet.

'I prayed, Lord, help me'

20/11/2006 22:43 - (SA)

Lynn Williams, Die Burger

Kirkwood - "They threatened to kill me. I prayed aloud, 'Lord, help me'," said Joan Schonken, 72, from a bed in the Sunday's River Valley hospital.

Her eyes were swollen, she had a long cut on her forehead and her limbs were black and blue.

She was home alone on her farm when two robbers struck on Sunday night.

The attack on Schonken, whose husband, Danie, died four months ago, has shocked the community.

Schonken said she was watching television when she suddenly heard a noise in the house. Before she could get up to phone anyone, the robbers began beating her.

"They beat me with a sjambok while they demanded weapons and money."

Lost a great deal of blood

When she said she didn't have a firearm, they wanted to know where the safe and the keys to the car were.

When the men threatened to kill her, she told them they were "good people", at which one began kicking her in the face without mercy.

Schonken lost consciousness before the robbers drove off in her Toyota Cressida.

She lost a great deal of blood during the attack.

When she came to, she staggered to the kitchen to call for help, but could not use the phone because her hands were tied behind her back.

Later, her son - also Danie Schonken - sent a security company to her home after she told him what had happened when he called as usual from Gauteng.

A heartbroken Schonken said her plea for them not to take her late husband's wedding ring, fell on deaf ears.

"I don't know why they acted so viciously towards me, because I don't harm anyone."

Schonken's brother, Flip van Greunen, said his feeling after the attack on her was "that we live in a land without laws".

Vehicle found abandoned

"My sister is helpless and has to use a cane. Why did they not just take what they wanted?"

Police spokesperson Marianette Olivier said the men took a TV set and a CD player with them in Schonken's car.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in KwaNobuhle. The robbers are still at large.

Marlise Scheepers, Beeld

Pretoria - An elderly delivery contractor for Beeld and his wife were hijacked and assaulted while delivering newspapers in Vorna Valley, Midrand early on Monday morning.

Nick Cornelius, 80, and his wife, Lynette, 56, had stopped at a complex in Van Heerden Road when three suspects in a vehicle stopped behind them.

According to Jacobus Waardhuizen, Mrs Cornelius's son, the three men pulled the couple out of their vehicle and assaulted them.

"They hit my mother and stepfather over the head with such force with a rifle that the magazine fell out. They threw my stepfather on the ground and jumped on his chest," said Waardhuizen.

"One of the men put a bottle of beer he had with him on the ground before they left in my parents' brand new Toyota Tazz," he said.

"A woman who lives in the complex heard my mother's screams and called the police."

Cornelius and his wife were taken to Tembisa Hospital where they were treated for their injuries.

They were discharged on Monday morning and were recuperating at their home in Newlands, Johannesburg.

Free State farmer, wife killed

November 17 2006 at 01:57PM

Police are looking for four suspects after a Free State farmer and his wife were killed on their farm Rietfontein near Verkeerdevlei, police said on Friday.

Sergeant Thandi Mbambo said Eugene Fourie, 56 and his wife Annamarie, 52, were shot around 9pm on Thursday. The couple's daughter Annerette was also shot and was in a serious but stable condition in the Medi Clinic Hospital in Bloemfontein.

"Eugene Fourie saw his neighbour out after they ate supper. As he was returning to the house the neighbour heard shots... and saw Eugene fall near the front door," said Mbambo. Shot several times, he died at the scene.

Mbambo said Fourie's wife and daughter were also shot at. Police found them in their kitchen where they had apparently locked themselves in.

"It was suspected that the whole family was shot at while outside and that the wife and daughter managed to run back into the house where they locked themselves in the kitchen".

Mbambo said eight cartridges were found outside the house, five of which were found beneath Fourie's body.

"It was later discovered that three hunting rifles and a pistol were missing from the safe." Police said they were looking for three to four suspects seen fleeing from the scene.

Mbambo said the motive for the attack was still unknown and anyone with information should contact Detective Inspector Derrick van Rhijn at the Bloemfontein Serious and Violent Crimes Unit on 082-705-8264. - Sapa

Columnist backs Zuma and takes aim at whites

Peter Fabricius

November 10 2006 at 10:44AM

A Botswana newspaper columnist who has backed Jacob Zuma to become president so he could "distribute white women" among his supporters has outraged some people who have branded the column as "sexist", "racist" and "hate speech".

The offending column under the heading "President Zuma will sort out White People" was published in the Sunday Standard in Gaborone.

Loose Canon said Zuma as president would address the wrongs of the past.

He berated white people for complaining about their loss of privilege, affirmative action and crime and said "they should count themselves lucky they were not shot on the day of liberation. Perhaps it's not too late to hang a few whites... just to remind them who is in charge".

He dismissed the corruption charges against Zuma as the result of "some jealous blacks and their white friends".

"The people love Jacob Zuma... but, as part of sorting out ungrateful white people, I want him to embark on a redistribution exercise. I want him to distribute white women among the long-suffering black chaps.

"Zuma can have one or two white women himself and then distribute the rest 'to his loyal supporters' - including Loose Canon himself," he wrote.

Despite trying to contact the editor of the Sunday Standard, Outsa Mokone, for comment, no reply had been received at the time of going to press.

White genocide may loom in South Africa

April 19, 2004

by Samuel Francis

The tenth anniversary of the Rwandan genocide is upon us this week, and some predict yet another African genocide is about to unfold in Sudan. In South Africa, however, where wicked white supremacy was dismantled (also a decade ago) and black majority rule established, all is happiness, a veritable cakewalk to utopia, according to neo-conservative pundit Max Boot.

The South African government has just given Boot a grand tour, and he faithfully reports what he was told in articles in the Los Angeles Times and the neo-conservative Weekly Standard. If his adventures in fantasy prove much of anything, they show why we need to ignore whatever neo-conservatives tell us.

"A flourishing democracy has taken root in South Africa's rocky soil," Boot bubbles. The kind of democracy he admires there is of interest—a species quite unknown to the Western world.

The African National Congress, the terrorist organization run by the Communist Party that took over the country in 1994, is the main political party and shows no sign of losing power. As Boot tells us, "There is no chance of the ANC losing the next election or the one after that. For the foreseeable future, South Africa seems destined to be a one-party democracy like India prior to the 1990s or Japan today."

Of course, in our part of the world, where we actually have democracies that (at least in theory) sport two whole political parties or more, "democracy" is not quite the term for political systems dominated forever by a single party.

Boot complains that these days no one ever hears about South Africa except in terms of AIDS and crime. As for the former, it has more HIV-positive people than any other country in the world, and AIDS is expected to reduce life expectancy to the age of 36 by 2010. Boot is pleased that even though "South Africa's crime rate has spiked to among the highest in the world," in recent years "it has at least stopped rising and stabilized, though at very high levels."

What he doesn't tell us is the truth about the systematic campaign of murder and torture carried out since 1994 against South Africa's white farmers. Some 1,600 have already been murdered, and while the government claims it's simply uncontrollable crime, the indications are that it's a deliberate effort to exterminate whites and drive them off the land.

But that's only farmers. Some estimates put the number of white Afrikaners killed by blacks since 1994 at 30,000 or more. Boot mentions none of this. "The most inspiring thing about South Africa," he sighs pleasantly, "is that there seems to be so little rancor."

After Boot finishes scribbling what the ANC's one-party democracy fed him, he should take a look at a forthcoming article on the realities of South Africa by a man who actually lives there, South African novelist Dan Roodt, in a forthcoming two-part article in American Renaissance, a monthly newsletter about race and race relations.

While Boot beams about the government's promotion of "economic growth" in the country but deplores the "bad news" of persistent economic inequality between blacks and whites, Roodt has somewhat different facts to report.

"Increasingly, whites are economic slaves," he writes. "They pay 80 percent of personal taxes, despite earning only 50 percent of total salaries. Afrikaners as a group pay the highest portion of overall tax in South Africa—36 percent—while white English-speakers pay 32 percent. When he was in exile in Britain, (President Thibo) Mbeki is reputed to have said, 'We will suck the whites dry,' and that is more or less what is happening. South Africa is like a small, First World economy like that of Denmark or Norway, still run by whites, but which must support a welfare state for 40 million blacks and Coloreds." That's the bad news Boot didn't want to tell us.

What is happening in South Africa is simply the deliberate transformation of a Western society, economy and political culture into a Third World swamp. The transformation is taking place because the dominant race of white Westerners has been pushed out of power by the majority non-white, non-Western race. But as Roodt understands, what's happening there is not unique.

"By a curious historical and demographic twist, the percentage of white people in South Africa—9 percent—corresponds precisely to the portion of whites as a share of the global population. South Africa is a microcosm of the world. The processes of demographic expansion, territorial occupation, and moral and intellectual subversion that we have suffered are similar to what the entire West is experiencing."

And people like Boot and his friends play a major role in pushing that experience toward its grim conclusion.

Victim needed brain surgery

31/10/2006 21:52 - (SA)

Pietermaritzburg - After an elderly woman shot and lightly wounded a robber in her home she was so badly beaten, stabbed and kicked that she had to have neuro-surgery, Pietermaritzburg High Court was told on Tuesday.

Allanah Valentine, of Hilton, near Pietermaritzburg, told the court that the man she had wounded and an accomplice robbed her of watches, rings, a gun, clothing, jewellery, money, semi-precious stones and other items after they broke in about 23:00 on August 29 last year.

She said that the assaults left her semi-conscious at times during the hour they were in her home.

The robbery and assaults took place while she was alone as her husband had gone to attend to an alarm raised at his factory.

Bongani Ndlovu, 21, and Kansas Madlala, 23, of Sweetwaters, near Hilton, pleaded not guilty to the charge of aggravated robbery.

Shot at robber

They tendered alibi defences, saying they were elsewhere at the time.

Valentine said that while her husband was away her dogs barked loudly and she fetched a revolver from her bedside.

A robber confronted her and she shot at him, the bullet grazed his stomach.

She and the wounded man fought for the firearm and the other robber hit her on the head, dazing her.

They kicked, stabbed and hit her while dragging her around the house and demanding money. She showed them a purse and they took the money.

They saw a safe in the office of the house and demanded that she open it and they took money from it.

They ransacked the house, taking items of value.

Lowered their trousers

In February this year, Valentine was called to Hilton police station to identify goods which had been stolen.

She also identified the two accused at an identity parade from a line-up of 14 men.

She identified the man she had wounded when those in the line-up were asked to lower their trousers.

The suspect she shot had a badly healed wound on his stomach, she said.

The case continues.
