Port Elizabeth - An elderly couple from Addo were recovering in the St Georges hospital after being attacked on their farm on Saturday at about 14:00.

Five unknown men entered the couple's home through the back door, tied up the couple and beat and kicked them, said police spokesperson Marianette Olivier.

The 75-year-old man broke an arm and several ribs while his 73-year-old wife suffered bruises.

The couple wanted to remain unnamed and said they only managed to untie themselves at 19:30 when they activated the alarm.

Several fire arms, a bakkie and a TV were stolen.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, a policeman handed himself over at Alicedale after he apparently tried to shoot his girlfriend.

The couple argued about another woman, during which the girlfriend threatened to leave the policeman and take away their child.

He shot at her with his service pistol, but she was not injured. A case of attempted murder was opened.
