Pretoria - When a man heard a noise at his neighbour's house, he went to investigate - with his hunting rifle - and shot an alleged robber in the head.
This is the second time this month in Pretoria in which a member of the public has shot and killed a gunman during a home robbery.
In the shooting on Tuesday night in Wingate Park, Pretoria east, police spokesperson Anton Breedt said the neighbour heard a noise coming from the house and went to investigate.
The noise was probably a stone that robbers had thrown through the lounge window about 22:00.
They clambered into the house through the broken window.
Breedt said the robbers were holding up the family, stealing their cellphones and jewellery, when their neighbour came out to investigate.
One of the robbers shot at the neighbour, who returned fire, hitting the man in the head and killing him.
The three other robbers took off and are still being sought.
Forensic criminologist Dr Pixie du Toit says statements like those of President Thabo Mbeki about crime not being out of control in South Africa, make people feel that it's "every man and woman for themselves".
