Pretoria police were on Friday investigating the murder of a 47-year-old man who was shot dead while watching television at his home in Centurion.
Dirk van Sittert was shot dead and his wife Adri, 45, wounded when robbers ambushed the couple at their home in Lyttleton Manor on Thursday night, Inspector Paul Ramaloko said.
Last week a woman who happens to be Adri's friend, was found murdered in her home at Kilner Park, Pretoria.
Martie Breet, 49, was found by her son. She had been tied up, strangled and her body left under a bed.
At the time, police said it seemed the robbers stole family's car and music equipment.
According to police, the crime statistics for armed robberies at homes in Pretoria rose from 931 to 1 222 over the last year, the Afrikaans daily Beeld reported.
The series of attacks has led ADT, a security company, to warn residents by SMS in the areas to be careful.
The SMSes warned clients to keep their windows and doors closed and to activate their alarms.
"Police have, since last year, intensified visible policing in the Pretoria area," Ramaloko said.
"However, it cannot be said that we will intensify more than we have already done because of the past incidents."
The robbers in the Van Sittert case escaped with a wallet, handbag, a cellphone and other items.
Adri, who was shot in the upper body, was in a stable condition in the intensive care unit of the Unitas Hospital.
Ramaloko said the robbers had come into the Van Sitterts' house through the back door.
The men shot at the couple when they tried to stand up.
Dirk died on the scene.
