Cape Town - A man was stabbed in his temple with a screwdriver during an attack at his Table View home late on Monday night.

Bryan Ferreira, 64, was taken to Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital in a critical condition, after he was found by his daughter in front of the house early on Tuesday.

The shaft of the screwdriver apparently went straight through his head.

Ferreira is thought to have been attacked late on Monday night after going outside his house in Jansens Avenue for an unknown reason.

Police spokesperson Inspector Bernadine Steyn told News24 that it was alleged he heard a noise outside but that could not be confirmed.

Ferreira's oldest daughter, Maré Sieling told Die Burger it looked like he went to get something from his car, as the door of the vehicle was still open.

She said there was blood against the wall of the house.

Nothing was taken in the vicious attack, using a screwdriver of about 20cm in length. The family believed the attack happened very quickly as no sounds were heard.

He was in a critical but stable condition on Friday, according to the family.

"We have opened a case of attempted murder for investigation," said Steyn.

A police spokesperson said they had no leads at present.
