Johannesburg - A 29-year-old man hired to do renovations at a house in Meyerspark, east of Silverton raped and robbed the wife of his employer on Friday morning, police said.

The Mozambican national, who had been living on the 65-year-old woman's property for the past five months allegedly went into her bedroom, took jewellery, R5 000 cash and two pistols from the safe before raping her, said Inspector Jan Shawane Sepato.

"Once the woman's husband left for work between 07:00 and 08:00, he unlocked one of the doors leading to the couple's bedroom and raped her," he said.

The man is alleged to have then locked the house and gates leading into the property and left with items stolen from the house.

But he was arrested moments later after the woman called members of the neighbourhood watch patrolling the streets.

He is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's court on Monday on charges of rape and theft.
