A Durban man was shot when he attempted to help his neighbour during an armed robbery in Durban's Umbilo area, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.
Inspector Michael Read said 30-year-old Shaun Coetzee was rushed to hospital after being shot in the chest.
He is reportedly in a stable condition.
On Thursday night, his neighbour - 72-year-old Martha Smalburger - was confronted by three men inside her home.
One had a firearm.
Smalburger's domestic worker managed to run next door and inform Coetzee.
Coetzee ran over to the house and was shot at as soon as he entered.
The suspects immediately fled the scene, taking nothing with them.
No other injuries were reported.
Smalburger had apparently opened the security gate to let her dogs out when the gang entered.
Read said the case was being investigated. - Sapa
