Family left traumatised after father's death

May 12 2009 at 01:15PM

A 58-year-old father of three was killed in his Sundowner, Randburg home during a botched robbery, police said on Tuesday.

"Keith Ward was returning to his residence in Sundowner. His wife was in their house with three children, aged 17, 13 and two, when she heard a noise," said Inspector Karen Jacobs.

Ward's wife looked out of the kitchen window and saw a man pointing a firearm at her. She then fled with the children into the main bedroom.

"On the way they heard Keith Ward shouting for help and a shot went off. She locked the door of the bedroom and pressed the panic button," said Jacobs.

The security guards arrived and found Ward in an entertainment room outside the main house.

"The 58-year-old father and husband was shot in the head by his attackers, sadly his injuries were too severe and he died at the scene," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman.

Dollman said while the rest of the family was not injured, they were traumatised and required counselling.

At this time, police could only say that a computer "tower box" was missing from the residence.

It was not yet known how many attackers there were. - Sapa
