The daughter of a Villieria pensioner watched helplessly as two robbers shot her father in the stomach before they fled with small household items.

August Schafer, 62, is believed to be in a critical condition in Steve Biko Academic Hospital after the attack at his 27th Street home last night.

Stanley Naude;, Schafer's grandson, spoke briefly to the Pretoria News outside the well-kept home.

Naude said he was at the movies when his mother called to say a robbery was in progress. "One suspect was inside the house. My mom was in my room and could see two of the robbers holding my grandfather by his arms.

"One of the guys turned in front of my grandfather and shot him in the stomach. My mom saw the blue flash from the gun," the young man said.

Naude said his mother screamed, startling the men. "They took my mom's purse and some small stuff.

"My grandfather is not doing well."

Naude's mother did not want to speak to the media, but she was overheard criticising the police's 10111 emergency service. "They just would not answer the phone," she said.

Police spokeswoman Aveline Hardaker confirmed the incident, but her details differed slightly.

Hardaker said Schafer was sitting in his front garden when he was accosted by three men. "Two of the men held him down while the third went inside the home to a bedroom.

"The victim's wife walked out and saw them. She got a fright and yelled. They shot the victim in the upper body and fled in a vehicle," she said.

Police were investigating a case of house robbery and attempted murder.
