Life for men who strangled octogenarian

July 28 2006 at 08:02PM

The killers of an 84-year-old Benoni woman were on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment by the Pretoria High Court.

One of the men also raped her, and received a second life term.

Judge Aubrey Ledwaba said Siyabulela Ngoma, 27, and Steven Nana Ntombeni, 38, both of Daveyton, acted out of greed and malice when they attacked the elderly Hannah Wheatley on August 27, 2004.

The men gained entry to her house by breaking down a door. Ntombeni raped her before they strangled her.

They stole her handbag, a toaster, a wall clock and a kettle. They earlier pleaded not guilty to murder, housebreaking with the intent to commit robbery and rape (only Ntombeni was charged with this).

They were, however, convicted on all the charges against them.

In addition to the life sentences, they also received a further 15 years for to housebreaking.

"I cannot understand what went through the mind of the accused when he raped such an old woman," Ledwaba said. He added that there could be no explanation which could justify such an outrageous crime. - Sapa
