Youths held for Franschhoek murder

January 30 2008 at 06:27PM

Three youths were arrested on Wednesday after the decomposing body of a 81-year-old woman was found at her house in Franschhoek, police said.

Spokesperson Inspector Bernadine Steyn said the boys aged between 16 and 18 were arrested around 11.30am.

Jana de Korte's body was found by her neighbours on a garage floor.

"It seems that the deceased sustained wounds to her head, possibly inflicted by a blunt object. She lived alone and was last seen in the afternoon of January 24."

Steyn said it seemed that entry to the house was gained through an open bedroom window at the back of the house.

"The house was ransacked and at this stage it seems that a laptop is missing. We are still in the process of determining whether anything else was taken from the house," she said.

The three face charges of murder and rape, and would appear in the Paarl Magistrate's Court on Thursday. - Sapa
