Nelspruit - A man who raped a 91-year-old woman who offered him tea and scones has been jailed for 16 years in the Nelspruit circuit of the Pretoria High Court.

David Malomane, 36, from Madras in Mariti near Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, raped and robbed the pensioner at her house in Graskop in June 2005.

He had knocked on her door and pretended to be hungry and in search of a job.

When she gave him tea and scones, he threw them in the dustbin and then attacked her.

"He abused the generosity of an old woman who felt sorry for him, and raped her in return. My Lord, Malomane should be removed from society as he proved that he is not capable of being around people," said Kotze.

Malomane also stole meat, alcohol, a table cloth, radio, CD player, radio and cassette player as well as clothes.

He said Malomane only pleaded guilty when he was told that he would be given a lighter sentence if he did so.

The pensioner was left bed-ridden after the rape and can no longer move around unassisted.

Judge Seun Moshiti also noted that Roodt now suffers from depression and had to see a psychologist after the attack.

Malomane has had several brushes with the law since 1988 for charges ranging from theft to housebreaking, assault and rape.

Moshiti sentenced Malomane to 12 years for rape and four years for theft.
